What is a Microsite?

1 Comment 29 May 2009

Microsites can provide you with a powerful online advantage. A microsite is generally a group of web pages which link to a parent or principal site which lives under its own domain name or URL. Microsites are beneficial for several reasons and uses.

A website of this type is usually showcasing any topic that isn’t centered on your businesses identity. Joint initiatives with other companies, campaigns, or promotions that target an audience outside the direct scope of a parent site are great uses for a microsite.

Another benefit to having a microsite is for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). These microsites allow a company to target a completely different niche than that of a parent website. Let’s say you’re an interior decorator whose main business identity is based around large and expensive custom consultations and executions. One day you realize that by only targeting those large jobs through your main business website you’re missing out on a market which probably can’t afford to spend quite the amount of money as your usual clients… and now you want that market too! You can create a microsite that targets the specific keywords or tags of that niche. And BAM, you’ve broadened your online audience.

A microsite should only really be used when you already have a main parent website.
