Have you ever wondered why the internet is so popular? Why so many people use the internet daily for hours on end? What draws people to the internet? Why people would freak out without it? Why business would change dramatically if the internet self-destructed? How the internet keeps us sane (or insane)? Why the internet will never grow old?
I woke up with these questions this morning and decided to have a go at giving a couple of answers as to why people love the internet ever so dearly.
Alrighty, let’s do this.
- They can connect with long lost family
- Chat to their friends when their phone is confiscated
- Email, Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, Bebo, etc., etc.
- Chat freely with total strangers about politics, bra’s or the UFO’s
- Can befriend guys from India and girls from Brazil on Hi5
- Can fly around reading news articles as they wish
- Can use at their own pace
- Love knowledge
- Are curious
- Is there when they’re ready for it, 24/7
- Doesn’t talk to you
- Gives you choice
- Let’s you choose
- Doesn’t smell
- Does what it’s told, instantly
- Doesn’t complain
- They can chat to ex-girlfriend, Auntie Jo, Little boy accross the street and watch Rove at the same time
- They can chat to Grandma without having to endure slobby kisses
- Express their opinion
- Be heard
- Be responded to
- Become known
- Become someone
- Become ‘that guy’
- Don’t need to have a shower to use it
- Can chat to 6 people around the globe wearing nothing but their undies (if that!)
- Can pretend to be someone they’re not
- Because it kills time
- Because it saves time
- Online shopping
- Saves from walking from store to store looking for ‘the right hue’
- To read/hear other peoples opinions
- They can grow their business
- Make their business look bigger than it really is
- They can get involved
- They can be a ‘hater’
- They can be tough, big, strong, or a ladies man
- Can be creative
- Don’t need to be someone to be someone
- Are set free
- Can feed their hunger to know:
- How stuff works
- Why stuff works
- Why stuff doesn’t work
- How to fix stuff that doesn’t work
- They can learn to:
- Fix a bike
- Kiss a girl
- Be a rock star
- Type faster
- Decorate like a professional
- Hack like a hacker from CSI
- Smell good
- Look good
- Feel good
- Keep up with the Jones’
- Ask Father Google what they can do to make their party exciting
- Invite total strangers to crash parties, houses and cop cars
- Get their 5 minutes of fame
- Get a reaction

- Play games
- Get free stuff
- Sell pixels as advertising
- Record videos
- Share videos
- Lie without feeling guilty
- Fake details when registering to receive the online Dolly magazine
- Can find out what superfragilistcatedexpealadocious means
- Can splurge in their love for weirdly, freaky small things
- Can stalk someone
- Can stare at a photo of Angelina Jolie without anyone knowing
- Can add the popular girl at school as their friend on MySpace
- Use Photoshop to remove pimples
- Can feel loved
- Can feel special
- Be a hero
- Can tell someone they love them
- Tell someone they hate them
- Get stuff of their chest
